Valerian has a deep, earthy, musky aroma with a pungent, slightly sour undertone. (for me it smells like medication or pharmacy), if You do not like this kind of smell, You might want choose CATNIP filling instead.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) affects cats quite differently from how it affects humans.
In many cats, valerian acts more like catnip than a sedative. Its root contains compounds including actinidine, which stimulates scent receptors and triggers behaviours such as rolling, rubbing, purring, licking, playful excitement, and sometimes zooming around. After that initial stimulation, some cats become relaxed or sleepy.
The response usually lasts only several minutes, and not every cat reacts. Interestingly, some cats that ignore catnip will respond to valerian.
While a large quantity of valerian might cause adverse effects in cats (like stomach upset), controlled amounts are safe. I always add only a small, measured dose (less than one teaspoon) to each toy, and the rest will be filled with regular fluffy filling. I use only natural, additive free dried valerian root. I never use concentrated extracts, tinctures or other processed forms.
